If you have a soft spot for European sedans, you’ll probably remember the Volvo S80. But what if we told you there’s a version of the S80 so rare, you’d need to be a Swedish insider just to track one down? Enter the Volvo S80 Nilsson 300, a car so exclusive, you might need a monocle just to glance at it. And now, one of them is up for sale in Sweden.
Don’t confuse the Nilsson 300 with the long-wheelbase Volvo S80L offered in China, because, spoiler alert, the S80L wasn’t an official Volvo product. Instead, the Nilsson 300 was crafted by Nilsson Special Vehicles, a Swedish company that’s more accustomed to building ambulances, emergency vehicles, hearses, and limousines than making run-of-the-mill sedans.

According to Bilweb Auctions, only 16 of these cars were ever made, and this particular one is number 2 in the series. Fortunately, it’s packing the largest engine option available: a 4.4-liter V8, built in Japan by Yamaha to Volvo’s specifications. This engine cranks out 311 horsepower (232 kW / 315 PS) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque—and, of course, it comes standard with all-wheel drive.
The wheelbase of this particular Nilsson 300 has been extended by 15 cm (5.9 inches), though we’ve spotted even longer versions in photos. Regardless, the Swedish limo is a clear standout from a regular S80, thanks to the partition between the front and rear doors.

Comfort Fit for Swedish Royalty
Inside, rear passengers are treated to generous legroom—because, really, that was the whole point of this conversion. But it doesn’t stop there. They also get to enjoy luxury features like dual displays mounted on the front headrests, plush floor mats, heated seats, wireless headphones, power outlets, and cupholders. It’s like a mobile living room, only with fewer awkward family gatherings.
This rare S80 has just 55,809 km (34,678 miles) on the clock and appears to be in great condition. The single previous owner was reportedly a Swedish company that used the stretched sedan for transporting staff from the airport to their conference facilities outside Stockholm.

The Nilsson 300 is expected to fetch between 340,000–380,000 Swedish Krona ($35,700 – 36,100). For comparison, used examples of the regular S80 in Sweden can be snagged for as little as $5,200, though, of course, that price is heavily dependent on their condition and how much soul-crushing daily driving they’ve endured.
The second generation of the Volvo S80 was produced from 2006 to 2016 before being replaced by the S90. Nilsson, of course, also got its hands on the S90, stretching it into a limousine. Soon, Volvo will launch the all-electric ES90, with a facelifted ICE-powered S90 on the way too. It’ll be interesting to see if Nilsson works its magic on these newer models, turning them into even rarer, over-the-top limos.
