The description alone should allude to the sheer unpredictably that Igorrr bag up, wrap up tight, and chuck directly at your forehead.
Amen is a record that trudges, soars, screams, wails, blasts, and echoes throughout genres without second thought. Igorrr mastermind Gautier Serre takes the modern notion that genre and categorisation are irrelevant and spins it on its head over the span of a dozen tracks, bouncing between continental influences and techniques. All of it balanced with industrial metal and operatic vocals, Amen is a fearless sonic endeavour into the complete unexpected.
Indian tones and techniques echo throughout the entirety of the record, from the third track “Limbo” all the way until the last track, “Silence.” Experimenting with both traditional Indian instruments like the sitar and the veena while encompassing vocal solos filled with vibratos and microtones, as obscure and unusual as the choice is to incorporate classical Indian tones into a metal record already jam packed with influences ranging from dubstep to doom metal, it fucking works. Igorrr nails it.
“Daemoni,” “Limbo,” “ADHD,” “Mustard Mucous,” and “Infestis” all feel like tracks cut from the same cloth, booming with distorted riffs and basslines, trudging through metal with dubstep disrupting its each and every move. “ADHD” sees the style of Gregorian chants introduced on top of the smorgasboard of sonic elements at bay, a prelude of what is to come on the unnerving, yet mind-numbing “Pure Disproportionate Black and White Nihilism.”
But, “Limbo” also sees the introduction of Spanish classical guitars and tones, with operatic vocals cementing itself as a staple throughout the record, reappearing on tracks like “Étude n°120” and “Pure Disproportionate Black and White Nihilism.” All of this to say, there’s something new to be discovered within each and every track Igorrr has to offer, every newfound element and technique unpredictable as Serre forgoes any and all musical rules and paints a cinematic vision of pure annihilation.
